Suggestions on what we might do to raise abuse awareness in our local communities

Pedophiles are attracted to prepubescent children and act on their sexual fantasies. It is a startling fact that the etiology of this paraphilia is unknown. Pedophiles comes from all walks of life and have no common socio-economic background. Contrary to media-propagated myths, most of them had not been sexually abused in childhood and the vast majority of pedophiles are also drawn to adults of the opposite sex (are heterosexuals).

In recent months publicity surrounding the Michael Jackson trial has brought a spotlight on Jehovah’s Witnesses and their beliefs. Normally a closed society that allows little information to the public has been forced to face some hard realities with regard to their theology.

We are happy to report mission accomplished in Japan . The trip went very smooth and much education was given to help those locally see the importance of why WT policy on abuse needs to be changed. We arrived in Tokyo , on the eighth of February and stayed with local people that helped with the seminars across Japan . The trip to bethel happened the following day it was about two hours to the bethel facility and home office of Jehovah's witnesses in Japan . The complex is a mammoth operation that covers over a city block. When you consider the cost of land in Japan the complex could easily be worth close to a billion dollars. Typically as with most Bethels the gates are open and there is a steady influx of people moving in and out of the complex, especially around noon.

On November 23, 1996, Maria Nunes arrived at the Gillets' home for a field service meeting of the members of The West North Miami Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, Inc. [Miami Congregation]. At this organizational meeting, the members prepared themselves for that day's field service, their "door-to-door canvassing and pamphleteering." Watchtower Bible & Tract Society of N.Y., Inc. v. Village of Stratton, 536 U.S. 150, 160 (2002). After the meeting ended, the members got in their cars to travel to areas where they would conduct field service that day. Nunes was parked in the Gillets' driveway and began to back out. Meanwhile, Hilda Gillet began crossing the street to get into another member's car when Nunes backed up into her and knocked her down. Hilda Gillet was then hit by a passing car operated by Francois JN Denis. Hilda Gillet was injured and required multiple surgeries and hospitalizations.

Please keep in mind that I have a restraining order against Sheila (my biological mother) who is still a JW in good standing and against Ralph who is also in good standing with them. The judge has told me that due to the severity of the case- (she read the witness impact statement) that this time she would grant it to me for a year but, next year when it is up for renewal she will grant it to me for life.

Earlier in the week on Monday a large group of Jehovah's Witnesses had made known their intention to come to court as they had for the last two years to publicly support and offer character statements for a man convicted on several counts of molesting his daughters. Brother Kanehe was disfellowshipped for confessing to child molestation in the early summer of 2002 but reinstated by August 2002. Why? As the elders stated, "Due to his great repentance." This is the man that beat his daughter when she finally said she would no longer be a silent lamb by staying silent about her abuse. Does that appear repentant to you? The mother supported bailing the molester out of jail but brought him back into the home thus forcing the youngest daughter out. Yet her actions caused no problem with her status as she remained a good example to the congregation by being appointed as an auxiliary pioneer.

The week of effort in the York County-Charlotte area was an event that will be remembered. The media offered excellent coverage with four television stations, four newspapers, and two radio stations offering coverage of silentlambs events. The first press conference was held at Rock Hill City Hall . We introduced the Meza Children's Memorial Fund. The fund will be set up to disburse on December 9, 2004 . On that day two volunteers, Faith and Cindy will have a press conference at Rock Hill City Hall and present three checks: 50% of the fund will go to the eleven year-old surviving daughter of the Meza family, Janet Meza. The other 50% will be presented in two equal checks to the local chapter of the Red Cross and Children's Attention Home. You can make your tax deductible donation to "silentlambs-MCMF" (Meza Children's Memorial Fund). Often when you make a donation you wonder where the money goes, this fund will go one hundred percent to help those directly involved. Silentlambs will donate the first one hundred dollars to help get this started.

At 7:30 p.m. on September 9th, we are requesting all who would like to participate to attend a candle light vigil in memory of the Meza children. The location will be at the Rock Hill National Guard Armory, 126 Museum Road in Rock Hill . The purpose will be to offer the community comfort and support for the recent murders that occurred on August 8 as well as show the importance we place of never letting children suffer as silent lambs.

A convicted rapist pleaded not guilty Thursday to killing a Seattle woman in 2004, less than a year after he was released from prison.

Curtis Thompson initially refused to leave the King County Jail for his hearing but finally did so under the threat of having jail officers forcibly drag him into the courtroom. He declined to answer any questions or sign paperwork, though he made several demands that the Superior Court judge denied.

At some point after 11:30 p.m. Sunday, investigators say either the father or the mother of Jairo, Denise and Denia Meza used a knife to slash their throats.

The SVT program ran another update on the Anders situation. It is interesting to note in the same congregation that Anders was in last fall a child molester was discovered. In December after the family reported the man to police over the protests of the elders he was subsequently disfellowshipped. The molester was reinstated on May 5, 2004 of a grand total of less than five months the same day he was convicted in a court of law for abuse.
